Postcards from Main Street
By Robert Kalinowski, Staff Writer
01/23/2007
NANTICOKE - When he was a teenager in high school and tasked
with compiling a family tree, little did Nanticoke resident
Mark Regulski know the experience would turn him into a
history buff.
A decade ago, he began collecting relics of his town's past
at flea markets and on the Internet.
Among his favorites are postcards highlighting scenes from
the town dating back to the late 1800s. In them, he saw
visual proof of the thriving city he only heard of from his
parents and grandparents.
So successful was his quest that Regulski now holds what
many in town consider to be the most complete collection of
Nanticoke-themed postcards anywhere. He has about 75.
The 29-year-old is a founding member of the Nanticoke
Historical Society, formed in 1996.
At the time, he was 19 and just one year out of high school.
His postcard collection was growing by the week. He heard
that there was another person in town who also collected
Nanticoke memorabilia - Chet Zaremba, the city's chief of
police at the time.
The two met and spoke. It was a time when several demolition
projects were being planned for historic structures in the
city - the demolition of the old Nanticoke High School on
East Main Street and the State Theatre building on Main
Street in the downtown.
They decided to form an organization dedicated to preserving
the town's history. Their postcard collections became the
foundation of the small, volunteer group.
Regulski's growing collection includes various images of the
city's main intersection, Main and Market streets, through
the years, from pre-automobile to trolley to the first cars
to travel Main street. The images show a vibrant downtown,
throngs of shoppers and a variety of stores.
Each building and storefront had its unique architectural
character.
"Before the malls and interstate, downtown was the place to
go," Regulski said. "I'm fascinated by all that, the type of
architecture you don't see now - they're all boxes."
A few of the cards focused on the industry behind the town
and much of the Wyoming Valley: anthracite coal mining. Some
of those cards proudly proclaimed, "Nanticoke, PA. - The
heart of anthracite." In the background of many of the cards
are the embodiment of the mining industry in northeastern
Pennsylvania - the coal breaker.
Today, the only breaker remaining in the area is the Huber
Breaker in Ashley, which Luzerne County is trying to
preserve.
But locals might be interested to see the breakers in the
Nanticoke area, and these old postcards and photographs do
just that, Regulski said.
Other cards contain scenes around town, from what is now
Patriot Square to the banks of the Susquehanna River, which
runs along the city's border.
Regulski has preserved his postcards both in albums and on
computer files.
Regulski continues to search for more postcards from the
town, but he thinks there might not be many more out there.
These days, he often checks the online auction site, E-Bay,
to find more cards.
Often, he's disappointed.
"Now I look on E-Bay and I'm like 'I have it...have
it...have it,'" he said.
Still, he continues the search.
"This is pretty much my main hobby," he said.
He said the usual cost for a post card he finds is $10. But
he has paid $30 to $40 for a card he doesn't have.
At 29, Regulski knows many of his peers aren't as enthused
by history as he is.He hopes more younger people will begin to cherish their
roots.
"I guess I'm one of the exceptions of young people who are
interested. More younger people should be concerned about
their history. A lot of people don't know how nice the town
once was. For me, it's curiosity and fascination about what
the town once looked like. And it's almost all forgotten by
a lot of people."

HOME AT LAST
-
The Nanticoke Historical Society is pleased to announce a permanent
home has been located at 229 East Main Street, to the rear
of the Church, in Nanticoke. The building is actually on Spring Street. A mail box has been installed and we will receive snail mail there. Space
will be now available for the display of historical artifacts. A new
computer has been installed to store records and historical data
electronically. The new telephone number
is 570-258-1367 and includes an answering machine to record messages. Things
are progressing nicely and we plan to update this note frequently so
keep looking here for those updates.
UPDATE: We are now actively searching for historical artifacts;
books, pictures, tools and any other historical memorabilia. We know there
are attics in Nanticoke and elsewhere that contain historical items that should
be preserved. We are now in the position of being able to store, catalog and
display such items. Survivors of deceased family members are asked to call the
Society at 570-258-1367 to discuss our collecting anything historical.

- Genealogical
Research
- The Nanticoke Historical Society is pleased to announce a research

you should purchase as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The cost is
$32.00.
Postal charges are $3.00 per book. Please print out and use the
form below for orders. If you are unable
to print the form, send a check for $33.00 payable to the Nanticoke
Historical Society at 229 East Main Street Nanticoke, and a new book
will be sent to you. For info you may
contact the Society at Historical@NanticokePa.com. You may
also call the Society at 570-258-1367
and leave a message. Additionally, the Society has a presence on the

It is gratifying to see that some towns are seriously involved with the history of

I'm proud that my family has chosen to stay in the area. My brother bought the old miners bank building by the park in town and has reclaimed it's original beauty. Other family members have made contributions to the town and my parents still live in the old fairchild home on Main Street.
We moved to Newport Twp. in 1977. Of the 7 of us, 6 live within 5 miles of "HOME".

I find that this site is very informational, would like to know more about the mines in the Nanticoke
area, and of the Indian that inhabited here also. My email address is shiztaz@hotmail.com
Also what type of monument is that in the center of the park in Nanticoke? I think a picture of Pete Gray would have much more
appropriate, that man deserves it more than that ,it would be nice to give him some
HONOR, while he is still with us!!!

Many wonderful memories are mine from my visits with my family in Nanticoke -- and whiling away the hours under the grape arbor on Noble Street, San Souci Park & the theatre. I'm older now (aren't we all?) and the family is smaller but I am fortunate to be able visit a couple of times with friends in Benton --
My grandmother was Apolonia Miskiewicz (sometimes spelled Muscavage). She was known as "Pola" or "Pearl".
Now, I can visit in person and keep abreast of news online too. Thank you and God Bless . . . .

Nice site.
I came across a good photo and text of a new school
building in Nanticoke on microfilm at the Osterhaut
Library. It is on the WB Record tape for June 3,
1905 on page 6 of that day. I would have copied it
but I was out of quarters and out of time.
I am writing a History of Sans Souci Park and met

I desperately need photographs of the Sans Souci Park to be included in the book. If you know of any, please contact me. Also, if I can be of any

Hello from NY -Glad to see that you are on the web, I have some old family pictures and some of the ones when the parade and the flood hit Nanticoke.
My grandfather was Fred James Lewis, he had worked in the mines from the age of 6 till 1956,
he passed away in 1976, just after the centennial celebration. I do genealogy and want to trace my family down there, and I was so glad to see this website. I'll visit it again. But please tell me who I could send the pictures that I have to as my children and gr-children will not know any of them and I do not wish them to be destroyed.thank you, I spent many a summer with them in Nanticoke and so has my children.

I am a genealogist researching the Meyer, Haase, side of my family that resided in Nanticoke from Oct 15,1888 when they arrived in New York to February 25, 1892 when they lived in Berrien County, Michigan. I had an Aunt Emma Haase who died there or in Michigan. I wanted to know how I would locate her. Maybe someone there might know. Please e-mail me with suggestions at

Today would have been Gloria Honabach's
(Koshinski) 69th birthday. She loved and taught music lessons in Nanticoke. She performed at many local events in the Luzerne County area and also appeared on the televised Polka Party show in the late 50's to early 60's. During the Christmas holidays her and many of her vocal students volunteered their time performing at nursing homes.
Does anyone from Nanticoke remember her?

What a great picture of the Kuskiewicz store. I grew up on College Street 1/2 block from the store. Your uncle Syl ran the store at the time. I also remember your Aunt Bernie. My favorite thing at the store were the twin
Popsicles in vanilla, root beer and blueberry flavors. I get cravings for them once in awhile and have actually tried to find them but can't.

Nanticoke and had friends in town. Ski owned Superflag and has a site called www.superflag.com

Hi, this is bill beacham once again enjoying your terrific Web Site with another question. Does anyone remember a soap box derby held on W. Main Street around 1935. I was entered in that race, and although my car hit a culvert and lost a wheel, I am interested in any information has on this subject. I believe it was the first soap box derby held in Nanticoke, sponsored by the City Chevrolet Company on E Main Street, and I believe it was won by a team entered by St Stanisylau's Orphanage located on the highway between Sheatown and Newport Center. If this rings a bell with any readers, please contact me at

I love the city of Nanticoke. I am a local legend in Nanticoke. Everyone remembers the time I hit 4 homeruns in one game, scored 60 points in a basketball game, and scored 4 touchdowns in a single game. You could hear about me, my brother Tom, and my father Steve. My father played several years of Major League Baseball and led the old Pacific League in home runs. They even named the tv show Sargent Bilko after him. They named Bilko doors after me and my brother. I was a standout wide receiver for Villanova University. I could have played in the NFL after being drafted by the Bengals. But my wife wouldn't let me go. My beautiful wife Mary, made me settle down here in Nanticoke. I now live in Honey Pot. This town is beautiful, my family loves it. I am now dedicating my life to teaching. I am a Social Studies teacher at Nanticoke High School. I love the town and the people. God bless Nanticoke!!!
best wishes

hello Nanticoke, I found this site by accident. I lived there in the forty's for awhile, was a
Nanticoke ram. Can anybody tell me if the old h.s. is there? I now live in Cape Girardeau,
Missouri. It's been a long time ,is the State still standing and is Gov. Fine still alive? As a kid I thought that was great A guv from nan.I remember dad taking me to St.Adalbert's Church in the town of Glen Lyon ,mom was a protestant and went with her to the English Baptist Church.
I remember the good cooking up there( paczki, kielbasa, golampki, ziemnina pierogi, chrosciki, cwikla, babka, and cznanina )Stookey's
barbeque and Swantkos over in the Hanover
section, remember talking to Pete Grey watching him flick matches and then playing major league
ball. My neighbor Herk Robinson was a batboy for the old St. Louis Browns and remembers old Pete well ,is good old Pete still around?
Had to go off to WWII and then did a stint in Korea.
I married a Missouri girl ( the pride of my life- Betsy Spann) taught for awhile philosophy at Southeast Missouri State, and now am retired, I edit
books. Thanks for the site , anybody out there remember myself and my family? My mom was Mildred Merithew and my father Stanley Z. Vilewinski , we lived for awhile on Hartford Street in Ashley when my dad worked at the Huber
Colliery then we moved to Union Street in Nanticoke, I am Dr. Casmimir D. Vilewinski

Wow!!! Is this site a lucky find. I have been thinking of home lately. I was looking to see if I could find some local papers to read. The Sunday
Independent doesn't have a web site, and anyhow when I asked Jeeves for the Wyoming Valley he found this site. I used to live on East Union Street. I miss the good crabs at Norkey's bar. I stumbled home many times from that dive. I was once an alter boy at Holy Trinity. Father Poplaski is a great
priest. He buried both my parents. I went to Holy Trinity School and later graduated from Nanticoke. I played real hard for Coach Syl Bozinski. I remember throwing popcorn and dumping drinks down the
balcony of the Nanticoke theater. Who could forget the wild parties down the Res and in Concrete City. After I graduated, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and I served 3 tours in Viet NAM. I received 3 purple hearts and a silver star. I made a career out of the military. I ran a few missions in Grenada, Middle East and some secret missions around the world. I've been everywhere. I was a Staff
Sergeant for a while in Quantico, Virginia and I later retired a Major. I now live in Falls Church, Virginia. I work as a consultant for a security company in Alexandria, Virginia. I lost contact with my sister Ester for a couple of years when her and Teddy Meshenski got divorced. She is now living in Fairbanks, Alaska. Mom and Dad passed in the late 70's. I haven't been back to Nanticoke since. I've been thinking of coming back home and opening up a nail business for my wife. I wouldn't mind buying a lake house around the area. Its hard to believe but I am maried. I brought my wife Mi Wein home from Viet Nam. We have been married 32 years. We went through hell getting her family out of Nam. I have 3 children, all girls. Hope to see home soon.
God Bless,

Is this a wonderful site or what? It brings back so many memories of my past. I haven't been in town for a since I left. Is it true that they tore down all the buildings down town? God, do I miss Carol's club burgers and a good
greasy Stuccio's pizza. I never graduated from GNA, but I passed the GED in the early 70's. I moved to Torrence, California for a while and worked as a bus boy. I saved up money and moved with some friends to Tuscon, Arizona. I actually went to college and got a degree in Hotel Restraunt Management. I now live in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and work for the Showboat Casino as a Pit Boss. If any of you are in the neighborhood ask for me. (IF YOUR FROM NANTICOKE I WILL GET YOU A DEAL) I got married to a wonderful girl Jasmine Lewis from Montross, Virginia. She works in another casino. I have one son, age 11. My sister Gracy lives in High Point, North Carolina. Gracy is twice married and works as a waitress at a Waffle House. Gracy has 4 kids and 2 more from her new marrage. My parents are now retired and moved to Jupiter, Flordia, they been their since the 1970's. I run into people all the time at the casino from Nanticoke. Most tell me that nothing changes. I miss home. Thanks to this site I could kind of keep tabs on the goings on in good ole Nanticoke.

Great Site. What fun it was to read all the messages from former residents. It was even more amazing to see where everyone has ended up. Joe Stegonshek here, class of '76. I grew up in the Hanover Section, and still have some family there. Still remember Stuccio's Pizza, Concrete City and the reservoirs. It doesn't surprise me that so many people still have Nanticoke in their hearts. After my stint in the military and traveling the world, I've ended up in Miami, FL. Paradise to me. I'll be back in June for my Mom's retirement. Don't miss the cold weather, though!!!!

How many bars are still in Nanticoke? Before I left town, my friends and I did a walking bar tour. We did a shot and a beer in every bar in town. How many cities in the country could you walk to each bar like back home. My favorite watering hole was Good Times. I left town to go to work in Athens, Georgia in 1992. I haven't been back soon. It sucks down south, its the bible belt, people don't know how to have fun like in Nanticoke. Miss you guys. Gene Wentz

Speaking of a bear. Who could forget the time when the BEAR escaped from the Tolly Tiber Circus down by West Side Park. I used to live on Coal St. That bear was in my back yard and walked down Coal St. and into the alley. It broke into Gerry's Drapieries. Gerry used to keep doughnuts on counter. The bear found them.
They caught him there. Officer Brown had to get the game commission to tranquilize that bear. That was the most excitement we ever had on Coal Street. Was this in the mid 80's? I don't have a email system. Using my landlords computer. How many remember this story???? PLEASE POST!!!

already but was never convicted
he was killed in a auto wreck on sans souci highway up by k mart plaza. the fires stopped then. i felt sorry for his wife and family for they were nice people.

ATTENTION NANTICOKE!!!
SOMEONE HAD A GOOD IDEA FOR A POST. I ALSO READ SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN THE TIMES LEADER FANFAIR. THIS TOWN SHOULD SPEND SOME MONEY AND ERECT A STATUE OF PETE GRAY IN THE NANTICOKE PARK. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW, PETE GRAY PLAYED FOR THE ST. LOUIS BROWNS WITH ONLY ONE ARM. THAT PARK IS BARE. ALL THAT STANDS IS THAT CONCRETE THING, AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE KIDS CALL THAT THING. PETE SPENT A TON OF TIME IN THAT OLD PARK HANGING OUT AND HE FED THE
SQUIRRELS AND PIGEONS. HE ALSO HUNG OUT AT THE OLD COALMINE BAR AND IN FRONT OF THE BANK. HE IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL. WHY NOT HONOR A LEGEND? WHY NOT BUILD SOMETHING THAT WILL STAND FOREVER? COME ON NANTICOKE CITY, DO SOMETHING HERE!!! LETS NOT LET THE LEGEND OF PETE GRAY DIE!!!

I am researching my family heritage. My mom, Irene Margaret HUSOVSKY was born in Sept. of 1924 in the city of Nanticoke. She attended Nanticoke High School and graduated from there. She received all of her sacraments from St. Joseph's Catholic church. Her father, John Husovsky was born in Austria and lived in Tulcik, Czech. He came to Freeland, Pa. via Ellis Island, then moved to Bethlehem and then Nanticoke. He was a miner in Nanticoke. He married Margaret D. WARGO. They had the following children; Irene M., Albin and Rita Husovsky. Later they relocated to Baltimore, Md. My great-grandfather, Michael WARGO lived in Nanticoke also. He married Anna HILL (name possibly changed from HROMADA OR HRMODA). Michael and Anna had the following children; Margaret, Anna, Emma, Ella, George, Michael and Helen. Michael Wargo was possibly a police officer for the city of Nanticoke. He died in 1918 during the flu epidemic. Anna died in 1941. They are buried in St. Josephs Slovak Cemetery.
Do you recognize these surnames? Husovsky, Wargo, Hill, HROMADA OR HRMODA, Michaels, Hawkins, Lechak,
or Lazas or have any information regarding these families, please let me know. My email address is:

I am a history professor for Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. I would like to know more about the Nanticoke Indians. I have been able to trace that they migrated from the eastern shore of Maryland. I also was able to find out that they were governed by the
Iroquois. I was able to locate a fellow scholar, Dr. Harold Cox from Wilkes University. He has told me that they were a very fierce tribe. They killed several settlers around a
cemetery in a place called Hanover Green. I would like to get more information about the Nanticoke Indians. I am writing a book on Indians in the Northeast. Please post back if you have any useful information.

Hi Great Site! I was born & raised in Nanticoke. Nanticoke has a great amount of history for me. My great
grandfather Anthoni Tolodziecki immigrated to this country from Poland in 1885 and he was one of the
first polish settlers in Nanticoke. He owned one of the first hotels. I don't know the name of it but I am trying to find out. Plus Nanticoke is known for all of it's coal mines. I am the daughter of a coal miners daughter. I saw my first movie at the State Theater on Main St.

I WAS TELLING MY WIFE ANN ABOUT AN AMAZING INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED WHILE VISITING MY GREAT UNCLE IN WANAMIE I WAS ABOUT TEN IN 1970 I THINK IT WAS. WE WERE PLAYING A PICKUP GAME OF BASEBALL WITH
COUSINS AND NEIGHBOR KIDS IN WANAMIE AT THE LITTLE LEAGUE FIELD .I THINK IT WAS JULY AROUND 5
O'CLOCK ALL OF A SUDDEN WE HEARD A TREMENDOUS CRASH WE LOOKED TO THE ROAD AND BEYOND IT WE SAW SMOKE, WE RAN TO A
STRIP-MINE PIT AND SAW A SHOVEL ( NOW I KNOW THEY ARE CALLED DRAGLINES ) FELL IN THIS BIG 200 FOOT PIT
, MY COUSIN STAN RAN TO CALL FOR HELP AND WE WATCHED AS THE SHOVEL OPERATOR CLIMBED OUT.
THAT HOLE HAD TO BE 200FT. DOWN. I STILL PICTURE IT IN MY MIND-IT WAS A MANITOWAC 4600 DRAGLINE (EVER SINCE THAT DAY I HAVE STUDIED SOMEWHAT COAL MINING EQUIPMENT.
DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THAT EVENT , ARE THERE PICTURES IN YOUR LOCAL PAPER.
I AM VERY CURIOUS THANK YOU AND THANKS FOR THE SITE

to Alvin Kurwelnz or Kurvelenez are you about 60 years old? I sort of remember the name as a little girl. my brothers Joe and Henry played many days near the fields by St Stans. my mom always had my long blond hair in curls wearing a dress and having those shiny
patent leather shoes. my dad made good money for Glen Alden at the time. he later got a big office job at the Huber colliery. we lived for awhile on Charles St we moved to Sharpe St. then to Laurel
St, i think that's right it was so long ago,
i don't know why we always moved so much. I went to the township elementary schools , but later my parents sent me to St. Leo's school in Ashley-wow those nuns
I remember playing with a good friend Betsy Kivler , I believe she lived on Institute
St. boy we had fun playing with the kids at St Stans, what fun but so long ago
my name is now Mary Tinklepaugh, I was Mary Tilletski
I moved to Duryea and went to St. John's high in Pittston
that's where I met Billy Tinklepaugh, what an amazing ballplayer. Betsy Kivler ended up in Duryea also marrying Chet
Draus, also a good ballplayer, but somewhat of a legend in his own mind ,my husband found a go
